Liquid Whey Handling
Define sweet / acid or other feed, composition, variability, holding and intended destination. Current storage / transfer correction differs from installing a new ingredient-conversion process.
Set the feed, fractionation / concentration, stream quality, utility and packaging boundary before scoping a whey or dairy-ingredient investment.
Discuss Your Project

Define sweet / acid or other feed, composition, variability, holding and intended destination. Current storage / transfer correction differs from installing a new ingredient-conversion process.
Specify the accepted target component / concentration and all product, permeate and waste streams. Specialist trials establish the membrane / conversion duty and realistic operating / cleaning envelope.
Drying adds a substantial specialist process, energy, powder handling and packaging boundary. Do not price a liquid concentration system as if it included dry powder production.
Agree quantity and quality for feed, retained product and other streams before equipment sizing.
Review the current installed liquid operation and its demonstrated resource or reliability constraint.
Coordinate sources, returns, cleaning, storage and packaging around the selected OEM process.
Review each system by its operating duty and the interfaces to be agreed before procurement.
Feed / intermediate liquid storage and transfer interfaces.
Selected specialist package heat / cold / power demand.
Multi-package recipe / state and CIP coordination.
Filtration / evaporation / drying / packaging OEM packages.

A useful whey request for quotation states the feed variability, required ingredient form and specification, all stream quantities, utility / cleaning duty and downstream packaging boundary. Separate scope confirmation from a capability promise. Compare total installed and operating costs of alternatives with the same accepted ingredient output.

| Liquid or dry product? | Accepted ingredient form and specialist package list. | Include or exclude drying explicitly. |
| What happens to each stream? | Measured product / permeate / waste qualities and cash basis. | Avoid counting all feed mass as saleable ingredient. |
| What must trials establish? | Qualified separation, fouling, cleaning and product acceptance. | Confirm actual supplier duty before returns. |
Start with the business outcome
A dairy ingredient project can involve storage / transfer, membrane fractionation, concentration, evaporation, drying or several distinct specialist packages. DPS can discuss the agreed engineering / utilities / controls and field interfaces; the owner needs a product-specific feed and output-stream basis before selecting equipment or projecting ingredient revenue. Qualify the actual project rather than treating every whey application as one standard line.
Confirm the exact whey & dairy ingredient product, preservation route and project suitability with DPS before assigning a delivery scope. Membrane selection and separation, evaporators, dryers, powder handling / explosion assessment, ingredient specifications and product release require qualified specialists and explicit supplier scope. This guide does not establish a DPS in-house whey technology or a universal recovery / purity result.
Document feed composition and variability, accepted target components and all product, permeate, by-product and waste streams.
Use agreed trials to check separation or concentration interfaces, delivered utilities, fouling behavior and the qualified cleaning sequence.
Verify accepted liquid or powder output, storage and packaging. Include drying and powder handling only where they belong in the agreed project.

Review the scope, cost assumptions and operating case for your project. The examples and calculators below support early planning and are not DPS quotations.
Start with the actual feed / product / permeate balance, service cost and specialist package records. Diagnose the agreed utility or interface duty before proposing new conversion technology.
Choose the feed / accepted product and all-stream model, run qualified trials and price the complete specialist process, site, utilities, waste and packaging.

| Observed condition | Measure before design | DPS / team decision | Economic basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unclear ingredient output basis | Feed and all accepted / nonaccepted stream data. | Agree product and specialist separation boundary. | Actual quantity × appropriate net contribution, if qualified. |
| High concentration utility spend | Metered baseline and delivered conditions. | Review recovery, distribution and process-package scope. | Verified baseline bills after added service. |
| Cleaning / fouling downtime | Qualified sequence, feed variability and service records. | Coordinate specialist process and CIP interfaces. | Measured resource / maintenance costs, not generic uptime claims. |
| Missing drying / waste scope | Full package and site list. | Compare complete liquid or powder alternatives. | Owner’s total investment and operating boundary. |

| Decision | Targeted Work | Broader Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid Handling | Correct storage, transfer and feed variability interfaces. | Add ingredient-conversion equipment only within an agreed specialist route. |
| Concentration | Review recovery, utilities and qualified cleaning around retained packages. | Include new separation duties and every product and waste stream. |
| Powder Production | Keep a liquid-only scope explicit. | Include drying, energy, powder handling and packaging as additional specialist scope. |
Compare proposals with the same product duty, supplier boundaries and acceptance basis. The amount below is a transparent planning example, not a market price range, supplier estimate or DPS quotation.
| Cost bucket | Assumed amount |
|---|---|
| Product / process and interface engineering | $66,000 |
| Defined configured / OEM component allowance | $231,000 |
| Mechanical / electrical field installation | $127,000 |
| Instrumentation and control integration | $66,000 |
| Commissioning and acceptance support | $39,000 |
| Training, documentation and closeout | $21,000 |
| Defined project scope | $550,000 |
| Separate site / facility additions | $100,000 |
| Capital contingency (15%) | $97,500 |
| Separate one-time startup / shutdown cost | $50,000 |
| Incremental working capital | $30,000 |
| Total initial cash | $827,500 |
The defined scope assumes applicable freight, procurement charges and taxes are included in the owner’s estimate. Add missing civil, land / shell, OEM, environmental, validation and permitting costs explicitly. Site and field conditions, duty, production access and quoted supplier scope determine actual price. Financing is excluded.
Hypothetical owner-budget case: This conservative utility / integration case assumes no incremental product sales; productive time, good-output rate and demand are all zero. Product quantity alone does not establish a profitable output gain. The baseline inputs assume $21,000 energy, $18,000 water / chemistry and $25,000 maintenance reductions per year. Avoided payroll is 600 hours × $40 × 50% cash realization. Verified baseline purchase reduction contributes $0; its basis is unchanged accepted baseline output. Deduct $20,000 added annual fixed cost. Result: $56,000 steady net benefit; initial cash $827,500 includes the separate site, contingency, startup and working-capital inputs. These are original illustrative assumptions, not a quotation, price benchmark or achieved DPS result.
Calculated from these assumptions: steady annual net benefit $56,000; year-one net cash $37,000; cash payback Beyond 5 years; five-year NPV at 10% is −$632,489. Change the assumptions below to test a different case.
Replace the illustrative inputs with your own measured or quoted values. The five-year pre-tax model uses good kilograms, demand-capped contribution and separately verified baseline savings; it is not a project quotation.
All defaults are illustrative. The default case is an operating-plant improvement, not a greenfield quote. For a new operation, set baseline savings to zero and enter every additional operating and capital cost.

Modeled incremental sales: 0 kg/year at $0.00/kg contribution. The base case does not recover the required discounted return within five years. Year-one net cash: $37,000.
Realization needed for the target operating payback
Not feasible
Demand, time, contribution or other cash benefits cannot meet the 5-year target under these assumptions.

| Base | $56,000 | −$632,489 | Beyond 5 years |
| Upside | $56,000 | −$632,489 | Beyond 5 years |
Downside: installed and site costs +20%, realization ×0.75 and unit contribution reduced by 20% of its absolute value. Upside: realization ×1.15, capped at 100%, and unit contribution improved by 10% of its absolute value. The demand ceiling still applies.
The default reproduces the main retrofit energy input of $21,000/year before added maintenance. The narrow worksheet is not a product-process calculation and does not automatically transfer values into the ROI model. Additional annual service is included in the main added-fixed-cost allowance; deduct it once.
